<image:title>Community & News - Dr. Carla MacLean presented on rapport and interviewing - February 26, 2026</image:title>
<image:caption>Southern Law is proud to continue our ongoing learning with Dr. Carla MacLean, psychologist and leading expert in cognitive bias, best practice interviewing techniques, and eyewitness memory. On February 26, Dr. MacLean led the first of three sessions we have planned for this year, on rapport and interviewing. Rapport isn’t just helpful; it’s essential. It’s the foundation for obtaining the most accurate and complete evidence from witnesses. Rapport is a skill we can learn, practice, and continually improve. Dr. MacLean will be returning to work with us in April, and will be the key presenter at our firm retreat in May. At Southern Law, our lawyers are highly skilled at what they do because we approach our work with a learning mindset. We are always striving for excellence in service of our clients. Looking forward to the next two sessions!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our lawyers are often called on to deal with challenging facts and make tough credibility assessments. Some of the most difficult files can be those involving children and youth. Corinne Longworth worked as a Crown Prosecutor for over ten years before joining Southern Law. Drawing on her experience, she brought together a panel of experts to talk to our lawyers about “Child and Youth Witnesses: Interviewing and Assessing Evidence.” The panel, including Carolyn Reimer from the BC Prosecution Service and Shelina Neallani of Southern Law, spoke about interviewing children and youth in the context of policing and prosecution; reviewed the law on credibility and reliability in this context; and shared valuable information about building rapport with young people. We also talked about the importance of taking care of ourselves when doing this work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Community & News - Tonie Beharrell joins Register of Arbitrators - February 27, 2023</image:title>
<image:caption>Please join us in congratulating Tonie Beharrell on her appointment to the Collective Agreement Arbitration Bureau (CAAB) Register of Arbitrators. Tonie’s experience in adjudication and mediation, and her unique experience as an advocate as employer counsel, and later, in-house counsel for a large public sector union, sets her apart. Tonie has long been a contributor to excellence in adjudication, and frequently teaches other adjudicators best practices in writing and inclusive adjudication. Her commitment to ensuring that her own learning (and that of the labour bar) is reflective of current social context is evident in her recent presentations on trauma-informed techniques for assessing credibility to the Arbitrators Association of BC and at the BC CLE Human Rights Conference, both co-presented with her colleague Reut Amit. We are excited for Tonie to continue to grow her practice as a neutral and to lend her expertise to the labour community to help them find answers to their disputes.</image:caption>
