  • Ritu Mahil brings with her over 20 years of experience in resolving, mediating and adjudicating complex labour and workplace disputes.

    Prior to joining Southern Butler Price, Ritu was a partner in one of Western Canada’s largest law firms where she was counsel on a wide variety of issues including internal conflicts, stakeholder consultations, labour disputes, strikes, lockouts, harassment investigations, and human rights complaints, as well as wrongful dismissal disputes. During her time in private practice, Ritu acted as chief negotiator in diverse collective bargaining sessions and conducted numerous harassment investigations, providing her with extensive bargaining experience as well as the requisite knowledge in fair processes in workplace investigations and subsequent relationship building. Ritu also provided advice on governance issues and strategic direction for clients on delicate ethics matters, harassment complaints and internal investigations. Most recently, Ritu’s interests have led her to be retained to conduct workplace audits with respect to racism, diversity and inclusion.

    Previously, Ritu served two terms as a Vice Chair of the BC Labour Relations Board where she acquired decision-making, mediation, and relationship-building skills that are necessary to foster relationships imperative to all workplaces.

  • Ritu commenced her legal career as a union-side lawyer, including a six-year tenure as in-house counsel with a large health-care union, providing her with the experience to work with a regionally-elected board, government and health authority officials, union members, and colleagues who were both included and excluded from a bargaining unit themselves.

    In addition to her law degree, Ritu has a Masters’ in Public Administration where she focused particularly on organizational effectiveness in public sector environments. Ritu has served on the Board of Governors of the University of Victoria and the University of the Fraser Valley, as well as President of West Coast LEAF (Legal Education Action Fund).

  • In 2007, Ritu was appointed Vice Chair of the British Columbia Labour Relations Board (2007 to 2012).

    In 2018, Ritu was on the Board of Directors for the University of Fraser Valley (2018 to 2019).

    In 1999, Ritu was on the Board of Governors of he University of Victoria (1999 to 2001).

    In 1998, Ritu was a Member of Senate of the University of Victoria (1998 to 2001).
