Carly Chunick is joining Southern Law in February. Carly is a BC–based lawyer and senior management professional with a distinguished career spanning administrative law, policing oversight, human rights, Indigenous rights, and complex regulatory and workplace investigations. Called to the Bar of BC in 2009, she is widely respected for her principled decision-making; her rigorous legal analysis; and her leadership across government, non-profit, and private-sector environments.
Presently, Carly serves as Director of Policing, Oversight and Accountability with the BC First Nations Justice Council, where she provides legal and strategic leadership on policing and community safety reform, and on justice sector oversight. In this role, she created a specialized legal clinic: the Police Accountability Unit - the first of its kind in the province. Her role further includes advising senior leadership, managing budgets and teams, co-developing legislation with the Province of BC, and representing the organization in high-level negotiations with the provincial and federal governments.
Carly's prior experience includes over a decade of investigative and senior leadership roles with the BC Office of the Ombudsperson, where she led the implementation of the Public Interest Disclosure Act across the broader public sector. While serving at that office, she conducted hundreds of investigations and oversaw the conduct of many more, including complex, high-profile investigations involving procedural fairness, trauma-informed practice, and systemic reform. At different points in her career, Carly also practiced Aboriginal and environmental law.
