Kait Carey is a Calgary-based lawyer and investigator, passionate about fostering safe and healthy workplaces by integrating trauma-informed processes to resolve workplace issues and other conflicts. Kait has a demonstrated history of providing thoughtful, compassionate, and objective advice in all areas of her practice.
Prior to joining Southern Law, Kait spent the majority of her practice serving as senior in-house counsel for a post-secondary institution, focusing on labour and employment law. Kait was responsible for leading complex files for the institution involving arbitrations, mediations, and workplace investigations.
Kait received her Juris Doctor from the University of Manitoba in 2012 and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2013 after articling at a large national law firm. In 2015, she received her Masters of Laws (First Class Honours) from Trinity College Dublin at the University of Dublin. She also has a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Calgary.
Kait is trained in trauma-informed practices (Forensic Experiential Trauma Informed, Mount Royal University, 2017) and holds a Certificate in Labour Relations (Ryerson University & Lancaster House, 2019).
Kait’s practice has provided broad-based advice to a variety of clients on a wide range of matters. Her expertise spans a diverse range of legal domains, including regulatory compliance, provincial and federal legislation, labour and employment law, collective bargaining, human rights, privacy, administrative law, copyright and intellectual property, governance, and substantial contractual agreements.
Kait is committed to helping clients foster safe and healthy workplaces by conducting fair, independent, and neutral investigations. Kait’s tenure within the post-secondary sector in an in-house capacity afforded her numerous occasions to lead the institution through files where she was involved in informal mediation procedures and consistently applied innovative approaches to problem-solving. Collaborating with employers, employees, and unions, Kait utilizes a fair-minded, practical, and creative approach to effectively addressing workplace challenges.
